Slavic pagan monks had been believed to commune with the gods, to predict the longer term and to prepare for religious rituals. The pagan priests, or magicians (known as volkhvy by the Rus’ people), resisted Christianity after Christianization.

Jordanes wrote that the Venethi, Sclavenes and Antes have been ethnonyms that referred to the identical group. Pliny the Elder wrote that the territory extending from the Vistula to Aeningia , was inhabited by the Sarmati, Wends, Scirii and Hirri.
